Window Efficiency

Making your home as efficient as possible is important; the more optimized the different parts of your home are, the more comfortable you and your family will be. Window efficiency is one of the most crucial parts of the home which can affect overall temperature and comfort.

Since the weather during Ottawa winters can fluctuate from very cold to very mild and quickly back to cold again, it’s important to ensure that the windows in your home are working the way they should be.

The following are some important considerations to make when thinking about window efficiency:

Take Advantage of Heat from the Sun
– Open curtains on your south-facing windows during the day to allow sunlight to naturally heat your home. Close them at night to reduce the chill you may feel from cold windows.

Find and Seal Leaks
– Seal the air leaks around utility cut-throughs for pipes (“plumbing penetrations”), gaps around chimneys and recessed lights in insulated ceilings.  Even more, don’t forget the unfinished spaces behind cupboards and closets too.

-Similarly, add caulk or weatherstripping to seal air leaks around leaky doors and windows. (source: energy.gov)
